Anaphylaxis and Epi-pen Training
Anaphylaxis and Epi-pen Training
This course can be delivered at your place of work
Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe, and potentially fatal, allergic reaction. Symptoms can occur within minutes of contact with the allergy-causing substance. Anaphylactic reactions can be mild to life threatening.
Common causes of anaphylaxis include;
• Food such as seafood and nuts
• Medication
• Insect stings
• Latex
Epinephrine (also known as Adrenaline) is the drug of choice for treating an anaphylactic reaction. It works to reverse the symptoms of the reaction and so prevents it from worsening. It is available via prescription in a self-injectable ‘pen’ type container, the most common example being the EpiPen®. It is important to administer epinephrine as soon as one detects the symptoms of anaphylaxis but training is required should you need to administer it to someone else.
